Facts & Figures: Homosexuality

Homosexual Population

Many homosexual activists claim that 10% of the U.S. population is gay, but these numbers are grossly overestimated. A 1993 survey by the Battelle Human Affairs Research Centers found that only 1.1% of all Americans are exclusively homosexual. (Rensberger, Boyce. "How Many Men in U.S. Are Gay?" The Washington Post, 17 April 1993, p. A.)

A survey conducted by the Alan Guttmacher Institute in 1993 found that 1% of men consider themselves exclusively homosexual. (Barringer, Felicity. "Sex Survey of American Men Finds 1% Are Gay," The New York Times, 15 April 1993, p. A1.)

A 1994 National Health and Social Life Survey at the University of Chicago found that 2.8% of men and 1.4% of women identified themselves as homosexual or bisexual.(Vobejda, Barbara. "Survey Finds Most Adults Sexually Staid," The Washington Post, 7 October 1994, p. A-1.)

A study of 904 men reported that 1.3% of them reported engaging in homosexuality in the past year, 5.2% reported engaging in homosexual activity at some time in their life, less than 1% reported engaging exclusively in homosexual sex in the past year. (Robert, S., and Turner, C. "Male-male sexual contact in USA," J Sex Research, 1991, 28, p. 491-519.)

Homosexuality and Mental Illness

Most Modern societies regard homosexuality as a mental illness. In 1992, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Office of International Affairs along with the APA Committee of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Psychiatrists conducted a survey of psychiatric associations around the world. They found that out of 125 countries, 97.6% consider homosexuality a mental illness, only three (United States, Denmark, South Africa) regard homosexuality as anything other than a mental illness. ("U.S. Psychiatrists’ Views on Homosexuality Differ from Colleagues’ in Other Countries," Psychiatric News, Vol. 28, No. 17, 3 September 1993.)

Homosexuality: Pedophilia and Drugs

Homosexuality is involved in at least one third and possibly as many as half of all child molestations. This is a significant portion considering the small percentage of the population that are homosexual. (Cameron, P., Coburn, W., Jr., Larson, H., Proctor, K., Forde, N., and Cameron, K., "Child Molestation and Homosexuality," Psychological Reports, 1986, 58, pp. 327-337.)

A homosexual teacher is twelve times more likely to molest a pupil than a heterosexual teacher. Between a quarter to four-fifth of all molestations of pupils are committed by homosexual teachers. (Cameron, P., "Homosexual Molestation of Children/Sexual Interaction of Teacher and Pupil," Psychological Reports, 1985, 57, pp. 1227-1236.)

29% of sexual advances and 25% of actual sexual contact of elementary school teachers with pupils are homosexual. 16% of sexual advances and 22% of actual sexual contacts of secondary teachers to pupils are homosexual. (Cameron, Paul. "Criminality, Social Disruption and Homosexuality." Institute for the Scientific Investigation of Sexuality, 1985)

The American Journal of Public Health reported that homosexuals are nine time more likely to report daily alcohol use, six times more likely to have recently used cocaine, nineteen times more likely to have used cocaine at least ten times in the past month, and seven times more likely to have injected an illegal drug. (Faulkner, Anne; Cranston, Kevin. "Correlates of Same-Sex Sexual Behavior in a Random Sample of Massachusetts High School Students," American Journal of Public Health, February 1998, p. 264.)

Environmental Causes of Homosexuality

In one study, 3.1% of men reported that by the age of 14 they were molested by a man. Of these, a third of them became homosexuals. (Cameron, Paul. "Criminality, Social Disruption and Homosexuality." Institute for the Scientific Investigation of Sexuality, 1985)

Dr. Elizabeth Moberly of Cambridge University reports that 85% to 90% of lesbians were victims of sexual abuse. ("Some Things That You May Not Know About Homosexuality," Berean League: Backgrounder, Second Edition, June 1991.)

Twice as many African Americans as white Americans are homosexuals and four times as many are bisexual. This is not due to race but instead to environmental causes. 62% of African Americans come from fatherless homes opposed to 17% of whites from fatherless homes. (Chu, S., et. al., "AIDS in Bisexual Men in U.S." American Journal of Public Health, 1992, v. 82, p. 220-224.)

Homosexuality and Sexually Transmitted Disease

Homosexuals average between 20 to 106 partners annually and between 300 to 500 in their lifetime. In one study of homosexuals, 28% reported having more than 1,000 partners, 70% reported over 50 partners, and only 2% reported having semi-monogamous relationships. (Coer, L., and Homes, K.K., "Sexual Transmission of Hepatitis A in Homosexual Men," New England Journal of Medicine, 1980, 302, pp. 435-438.)

A homosexual male is 5,000 times more likely to get AIDS than a heterosexual male, although this number is decreasing as the disease is being spread to heterosexuals through bisexuals and drug usage. ("Medical Aspects of Homosexuality;" cf. O’Hara, K., "On Double Suicide," Psychiatricia at Naurologica Japonica, 1992, 44, p. 8.)

Dr. Richard Fitzgibbons, a Pennsylvania psychiatrist, reports that 40% of homosexuals in San Francisco, 30% of homosexuals in New York, and 25% of homosexuals in Washington, D.C. are HIV positive. Fitzgibbons also estimates that about 40% of homosexuals engage in unprotected sex. ("The Intimidation Factor," Focus on the Family: Citizen. 22 September 1997, p. 5.)

Homosexuals are 52% more likely to have at least one sexual transmitted disease, 245% more likely to have two sexual transmitted diseases, and 414% more likely to report intentional infection of others. (Cameron, Paul. "Criminality, Social Disruption and Homosexuality." Institute for the Scientific Investigation of Sexuality, 1985)

The United States spends more per death on AIDS research than on any other leading cause of death, as shown on the AIDS Funding Chart.

Homosexuals Can Change

88% of lesbians and 73% of gays claim that they had been sexual aroused by the opposite sex. 85% of lesbians and 54% of gays report having sex with someone of the opposite sex. 82% of lesbians and 66% of gays report that they have been "in love" with someone of the opposite sex. (Cameron, P., Cameron, K., and Proctor, K. "Effect of homosexuality upon Public Health and Social Order," 1989, Psychological Reports, 64, 1167-1179.)

About 30% of homosexuals who seek psychotherapy successfully leave homosexuality. The largest factor in determining their success is religious commitment. (Cameron, Paul. "What Cause Homosexual Desire and Can It Be Changed?" Family Research Institute, 1992. )

If someone comes from a non-religious family background, they are 450% more likely to choose homosexuality. This seems to be the largest determining factor. ("Homosexual Rights: What’s Wrong," Focus on the Family: Citizen. 18 March 1991, p. 6, from the Institute for the Scientific Investigation of Sexuality.)
