Abortion:
An American Holocaust
Holocaust
-a mass slaughter of people; a thorough destruction involving extensive
loss of life esp. through fire. (Merriam-Webster)
On January 22,
1973, the United States Supreme Court handed down their decision
in Roe v. Wade making abortion legal in the United States
based on a women’s "right to privacy." Because of
this decision, over 37 million babies have been legally killed in
the United States through abortion. That is at a rate of 4,200 abortions
per day or about one abortion every 20 seconds. (Numbers based on
Alan Guttmacher Institute report from 1973 to 1996 and estimates
for 1997 and 1998 based on the U.S. average.) This makes abortion
a greater holocaust in terms of numbers than the Nazi Holocaust
of Hitler killing about 12 million and Bolshevik Holocaust of Stalin
killing about 20 million. The killing of millions of unborn babies
in our country no doubt meets that definition.
The vast majority
of abortions are performed primarily for convenience. The Alan Guttmacher
Institute, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood, conducted a study
to determine the mother’s motivation for having an abortion.
75% of the women said that it was to avoid interference with work
or other responsibilities, 66% said that they could not afford a
baby, 50% said that they did not want to be a single parent, only
1% said that it was due to a birth defect, and only 1% said that
it was because they were a victim of rape or incest. By allowing
abortions to take place to make our lives easier, society has replaced
the value of sanctity of life with quality of life . What kind of
society allows innocent people to be killed in order to make their
own lives more convenient?
Abortion advocates
champion the idea of "freedom of choice." But what choice
are they really talking about? The choice in abortion always results
in killing an innocent baby. The baby has no choice in the matter.
The only choice that abortion supports is the choice of death. Choice
is an abstract concept that pales in comparison to the concrete
object of a child. Freedom of choice should no more give a woman
the right to kill her pre-born child, than it gives her the right
to abuse her child after it is born.
Abortion advocates
argue that the unborn child is not really a person; therefore, it
is justified in killing him. However, life begins at conception.
At conception, a single cell called a zygote is formed. The zygote
contains its own genetic code, which will determine its sex, race,
height, eye color, and hair color. The zygote is a unique organism,
separate in identity from both its mother and father. Life has begun.
Abortion continues
in the United States largely because the people who oppose it stay
silent. We cannot stand idly by while we allow abortion to continue.
We must speak out for the unborn children. They cannot defend themselves.
If we do not defend them, then no one will.
